QuickBooks Error OL 203 is one of the commonly occurring online banking setup and connection errors encountered by the users of QuickBooks accounting software.

Banks usually need identity confirmation before retrieving data from any accounting or financial management software such as QuickBooks. Before trying to fix QuickBooks Error Code OL 203, in order to meet the security requirements of your bank, you should first login into your bank account and check if you have any notifications in your message center. But you should take into consideration that you should log in into your bank account not from your QuickBooks but from outside it.

If there is some notification, you should contact your bank directly for getting the information and instructions. Usually, you will receive an identity confirmation request when you install a new QB version or when you update your current QuickBooks version.

What causes QuickBooks Error OL 203?

A QuickBooks user may receive Error OL 203 because of one of the following -

  • There is some problem at your financial institution or bank such as a critical alert generated by your bank requiring your acknowledgment; some changes have been made by your financial institution to the services offered by them or there may be changes to Web Connect feature or Direct Connect; your bank has merged with some other bank and has changed its name; your bank account for online banking in QB is not active; the servers of your financial institution or bank are down; etc.
  • There is some issue with your internet connection.
  • Issues with your company file’s account or accounts.
  • Download or import function is not working properly.
  • You are using an outdated or discontinued version of Windows.
  • Your QuickBooks version has been discontinued.

Solutions to fix QuickBooks Error OL 203

To fix QuickBooks Error OL 203, you should perform the steps given below in the same order as shown here. After each step, check for OL 203 error, if it is not resolved, you should move to the next step.

Activate TLS 1.2

You have to follow the steps given below to activate TLS 1.2 in your Internet Explorer web browser -

  • Firstly, look for Internet Explorer icon on the desktop.
  • Then, click two times on Internet Explorer 11 icon to open it. If you have an older Internet Explorer version installed, update it to the latest one.
  • Look for the gear symbol on the upper right area of your web browser and click on it.
  • Open Internet Options.
  • Go to the Advanced Tab.
  • Look for the Security section.
  • Search for Use TLS 1.0 option and remove the checkmark against it.
  • Now, look for Use TLS 1.2 option and place a checkmark against it.
  • Chose Apply and click on the OK button.
  • Close all programs that are in the opened state.
  • Reboot your PC.

Now, check for QuickBooks Error Code OL 203. If it is not resolved, move to next step.

Make a new test QB company file

By doing this step, a QB user can determine if the bank or its servers are causing the QuickBooks Error OL 203.

  • First of all, look for the File menu in the QuickBooks menu bar.
  • Click on it and then choose the New Company.
  • After that, you have to click on Express Start.
  • Now, you have to add the bank account with which OL 203 was appearing to the just created test QB company file. Also, you have to set up the bank account for Bank Feeds.
  • In this step, you are required to test the account by downloading the Bank Feed transactions.
  • If Error OL 203 is still appearing, it implies that there is some kind of issue at your financial institution or bank. To fix it, you have to contact your financial institution or bank.
  • If no error message is appearing, it implies that there is no problem with your bank.

Use Ctrl key and run setup for account

If the connection with your bank is incomplete or unsuccessful, follow the steps given below steps to recover. If the Lightning bolt is activated, i.e., it is displayed on the Chart of Accounts, follow these steps -

  • First of all, back up your QB company file.
  • Now, search QB file for the inactive accounts that have Lightning Bolt activated. Remove the Lightning Bolt. Close and then open again your company file. Now, you are required to run again
  • Bank Feeds set up and after that try downloading transactions. If in case QuickBooks Error OL 203 is still occurring, go to the next step.
  • Go to Edit Account and then you have to deactivate all online services for the account.
  • Again, run setup for Bank Feeds. You should keep the Ctrl key pressed every time a command is clicked.
  • Navigate to Bank Feeds Center. Now, keep pressed the Ctrl key on the keyboard when you click on the Send/Receive. You should keep it pressed until a screen asking you to enter the PIN appears. Release the Ctrl key and type the PIN. Now, again keep pressed the Ctrl key and click on the OK button. Keep it pressed until transactions have been downloaded message appears.

If in case, QuickBooks Error Code OL 203 does not pop up, it implies that you have successfully troubleshot the Internet connection with your financial institution or bank. Troubleshooting can be stopped as transactions have got successfully downloaded.

If in case, QuickBooks Error OL 203 is flashing on the screen, it implies that this method cannot rectify the problem. You should move to the next step, i.e., merge accounts step.

If the Lightning bolt is not activated, i.e., you are unable to see the Lightning bolt or Bank Feed settings tab on the account, follow these steps –

  • Firstly, back up your QuickBooks company file.
  • Again, run setup for Bank Feeds. You should keep the Ctrl key pressed every time a command is clicked.
  • Navigate to Bank Feeds Center. Now, keep pressed the Ctrl key on the keyboard when you click on the Send/Receive. You should keep it pressed until a screen asking you to enter the PIN appears. Release the Ctrl key and type the PIN. Now, again keep pressed the Ctrl key and click on the OK button. Keep it pressed until transactions have been downloaded message appears.

If in case, QuickBooks Error OL 203 does not appear, it implies that you have successfully fixed the problem in the Internet connection with your financial institution or bank. Troubleshooting can be stopped as the transactions have got successfully downloaded.

If in case, the error is still not fixed, it implies that this method cannot troubleshoot the problem. You should move to the next step, i.e., merge accounts step to resolve the error.

Create and merge accounts

It may be the case that QuickBooks Error OL 203 is occurring because of some issue with the account being set up or to which you are downloading transactions.

Before creating and merging accounts, if there are some pending transactions, you should clear them. If you have downloaded transactions previously but they are unmatched, you should match them.

In this step, you have to make a new account. After this, you have to merge the accounts and set up the account for bank feeds. To this newly merged account, you have to download the transactions.

Deactivate Accounts

  • Open Chart of Accounts.
  • Choose Include inactive checkbox.
  • For inactive account, deactivate bank feeds.
  • Close and re-open the file.
  • Now, you have to set up each of the accounts for Bank Feeds.
  • Check whether QuickBooks Error OL 203 is appearing.

Contact your financial institution or bank

If above the steps failed to resolve QuickBooks Error OL 203, then you should contact your bank or financial institution. Banks that support QuickBooks online banking have a support channel. You can contact your financial institution or bank and follow an escalation path to the QuickBooks developer’s online connectivity group.
