How to Resolve QuickBooks Error 6073?

QuickBooks Error 6073 takes place when the user is trying to open the company file. QuickBooks Error code 6073 comes with the message that QuickBooks accounting software is not able to open the company file. The message also states that the company file may have been opened by another user.

What causes QuickBooks Error Code 6073?

Any of the following factors can lead to error 6073

  • The company file that you are trying to open is already opened on some other PC in single-user mode.
  • The folder in which your QB company file is stored is only a read-only network folder.
  • A Linux server has been used to host the files and more than one set of login credentials is being used to login into the shared folder.
  • The company file that you are trying to open is being accessed by someone else through a remote software and the computer hosting the company file is seeing that the user is still active, i.e., logged on.

Solutions for fixing QuickBooks Error 6073

Various solutions are available that help you in troubleshooting Error Code 6073 –

Download and run QuickBooks File Doctor

QuickBooks File Doctor is a great tool developed by Intuit to fix issues with your company file and network. The File Doctor tool can be downloaded from the Intuit website. After you have downloaded it, run the qbfd.exe file by double-clicking it and follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

Fix the QuickBooks Error 6073 manually

If the above solution failed to fix QuickBooks Error Code 6073, try fixing the error manually.  Follow the following steps, if in case your company file is in an opened state in some other PC in single-user mode –

  • First of all, close QuickBooks in all workstations.
  • On the computer that is hosting the QB company file, open the file.
  • Navigate to the File menu.
  • From the list that appears, choose Switch to Multi-user
  • If you are still facing the same issue, restart all your computers.

Follow these steps for fixing QuickBooks Error 6073, if in case your company file is in an opened state in single-user mode on the computer that is acting as the host –

  • Click File.
  • From the list that appears, click Close Company.
  • Again, open the company file.
  • Navigate to the File menu once again.
  • From the list that appears, Click Open or Restore Company.
  • Now, choose Open a Company File.
  • Click Next.
  • Now, choose your company file.
  • Click Open File in Multi-user Mode.
  • Click Open.

Follow these steps for fixing QuickBooks Error Code 6073, if in case your company file is located in a folder that is only a read-only network folder –

  • First of all, access the computer that is hosting your company file.
  • Go to the folder storing the company file and open it.
  • From your mouse, right-click anywhere on the empty space in the folder, then choose Properties.
  • In the Properties window, move to the Security tab.
  • Now, choose the user who is facing problems in logging in, then Edit.
  • Place a checkmark against Allow for Full Control.
  • Click Apply.
  • Click OK.

Follow these steps for fixing QuickBooks Error Code 6073, if in case the computer is being accessed through a remote software –

  • Press Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys simultaneously.
  • Select Task Manager from the list that appears.
  • In the Task Manager screen, move to the Processes tab.
  • Look for any processes that are running under the name of the user-facing the issue.
  • If in case, you find some running processes under that user, reboot your computer.
