How You Can Fix QuickBooks Error 15106

No doubt QuickBooks is an excellent program for accounting with simple useable features helpful to handle day-to-day accounting operations of business operations. But errors can be one of the annoying things to deal with. You open the program and the error box pops up.

Error 15106 is a payroll update error, which means that something is stopping the software from updating. Let us get into the details.

How does it look?

QuickBooks Error 15106 is usually encountered while downloading QuickBooks Desktop updates with an error message, “The update program cannot be opened. The update program is damaged.”

The problem here is that there is something that is stopping the QuickBooks update program from starting.

QuickBooks Payroll Update Error 15106 occurs because of two reasons:

  1. Spy Sweeper is the web root antivirus program.

Spy Sweeper causes this error to happen because it takes QuickBooks update program as a malware which downloads unwanted stuff into the computer.

  1. You are not logged in as the administrator.

An administrator, in a computer system, is a person who has the rights to modify the core entries of a computer system like registries, programs, adding or modifying user accounts, etc. Installing or updating any program on Windows needs administrator access. If you are not logged in as the administrator, this error might pop up.

How to find out?

Wondering which of the above two reasons are causing the error to pop? Find out through following steps.

  1. Checking if Spy Sweeper is running.

Step 1: Open Task Manager by Press Ctrl+Alt+Esc.

Step 2: Now click on “More Details” at the left bottom tab of the window.

Step 3: Under the “Processes” tab, find “SpySweeper.exe”.

  1. Checking if you have signed in as the Administrator.

Step 1: Open Control Panel and select User Accounts.

Step 2: Click on Users. If “Administrator” is displayed under your account picture, then you have logged in as the administrator.


How to Fix it?

Fixing error 15106 is rather easy to fix. However, if these solutions don’t work out, don’t hesitate to contact their customer care center by phone or email. Now, coming back to the solutions.

  1. Uninstall Spy Sweeper.

If you find “SpySweeper.exe” in the task manager, follow the steps.

Step 1: Open “Add/Remove Programs” and look for Spy Sweeper

Step 2: Click on it and select “Uninstall”.

Step 3: Follow the steps to uninstall it.

  1. Logging in as the Administrator

Log in from another account which has administrator privileges or asks your network administrator to grant you administrator privileges and try running the program again.

  1. If you are logged in as the Administrator and cannot find Spy Sweeper, you need to reset the update. Open C:\ Program Files\ Common Files \ Intuit\QuickBooksxx\Components. Look for a folder called downloadqb<nn> and rename it to download<nn>.old.
  2. If all the above solutions do not work, perform a complete uninstall of QuickBooks and reinstall it. This should solve the issue.
