What is QuickBooks Error c=1303 and to fix it

If you are facing this error code issue, then while you set up QuickBooks Desktop, the error message given below will display:

Error 1303: Installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory. “C:\…\Intuit”

This may likely take place if either SYSTEM group or the Everyone group does not have Full Control privileges for the directory mentioned in the error. You may also use the QuickBooks Diagnostic Tool or attempt the manual steps for resolving the error.

Solution 1: Download and access QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool

Step 1: Download the QuickBooksInstallDiagnosticTool.exe file which will try to fix this problem.
Step 2: Save the file to your desktop.
Step 3: Double-click on the file to run the tool.
Step 4: Choose the first option “I am having problems installing QuickBooks” and tap OK.

Solution 2: Manually fix this problem

Use this solution if the tool did not resolve the issue or if you prefer manual troubleshooting steps.

Step 1: Edit the permissions for the correct folders

Manually modify permissions to Full Control for the SYSTEM and everyone groups for the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.

  1. On your keyboard, click Windows+ R to open the Run 
  2. In the Open field, enter the path C:\ProgramData\COMMON FILES\ and press OK. A window opens and shows the folder contents.
  3. In the Folder window, tap Organize then select Properties.
    Windows 10: Choose Properties on the top ribbon of the folder window.
  4. In the Properties window, visit the Security 
  5. Tap the Advanced 
  6. Click on the Edit 
  7. Scroll down the list of Permission entries and double-click on the SYSTEM 
  8. Select the checkbox for the Full Control row in the Allow column and press OK.
  9. Repeat steps a to h with the Everyone group (if it exists).
  10. Check the checkbox labeled Replace all existing inheritable permissions on all descendants with inheritable permissions from this object.
  11. Click OK in both the Advanced Security Settings window and again in the COMMON FILES Properties window.
  12. Set up QuickBooks Desktop.

Step 2: Disable Simple File Sharing

  1. On your keyboard, click Windows + R to open the Run 
  2. Copy and paste exe shell32.dll,Options_RunDLL 0and press Enter.
  3. On the View tab, scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings
  4. Clear the Use simple file sharing (recommended)
  5. Choose OK and proceed with QuickBooks Desktop installation.
