QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery (ADR) is a feature in QuickBooks that may allow users of QuickBooks to recover all or almost all of their data if in case data loss or corruption has occurred. QuickBooks Data Recovery Tool was introduced by Intuit in QuickBooks 2012 (and later) and QB Enterprise Solutions 13.0 R4 (and later).

When compared to Intuit Data Services, Auto Data Recovery (ADR) offers a faster way of recovering data. But a QuickBooks user should remember that Auto Data Recovery should only is used as a last resort when all of the appropriate troubleshooting methods have been fully tried.

QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery (ADR) is only available in the following QuickBooks products for Microsoft Windows operating system - QB Pro, QB Premier, and QB Enterprise Solutions. QuickBooks Accountant editions lack this feature. There is a limitation for ADR file size and it is 1.5 GB. An ADR file will not be generated if in case, backup is greater than 1.5 GB.

How does QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery work?

QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery helps a QuickBooks user to recover the lost file by the following means –

  • ADR makes use of your current transaction log file and a copy of company file to restore lost transactions.
  • QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery utilizes copies of both company file and transaction log file to restore transactions except last few hours of transactions.

How to Recover Recent Transactions by Making use of the original transaction Log File?

Follow these steps to use QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery feature to recover all recent transactions by making use of the original transaction log file (.TLG file) and company file’s ADR version(.QBW.adr file) –

  1. Create a folder with the name QBTest on the desktop.
  2. Open the folder that is storing your company file. Location of your company file can be checked on the Product Information Screen (press F2 or simultaneously press Ctrl and 1 keys to open this screen) and No Company Open Window.
  3. In the company file’s folder, find the .tlg file. Both the .tlg file and the company file have the same name. If in case, you are unable to find the .tlg file, perform these steps -
    • Simultaneously press Windows and E keys.
    • File Explorer will open.
    • Click on Organize.
    • Go to the folder and Search Options.
    • If you are using Windows 10, 8.1 or 8, go to View in the menu bar, then place a checkmark against File Name Extensions.
    • Now, choose Hide Extensions for Known File Types.
    • Click the Apply button and after that OK.

  1. Copy and pastes the transaction log file (.tlg file) to the QBTest folder that you created on your desktop in the step no. 1 above.
  2. Now, an open folder named QuickBooksAutoDataRecovery. Location of this folder is the same as your company file’s location.
  3. Copy and paste the company file’s ADR version(.QBW.adr file) to QBTest Folder.
  4. Right-click the .QBW.adr file, choose Rename from the list that appears. Delete .adrfrom the name.
  5. After you have renamed the ADR version of the company file, open QuickBooks.
  6. In the QBTest folder, open the saved company file. Check whether all transactions are thereby using your account register.
  7. Now, go to File.
  8. Choose Utilities.
  9. Select Verify Data under Utilities to check recovered file’s data integrity.
  10. If you find this copy of your QB company file good, you can proceed by moving your damaged company file to some other location and transferring the copy of your QB company file from the QBTest folder to the original location.

How to Recover Recent Transactions Using ADR Versions of Both Company File and Transaction Log File?

Follow these steps to use the QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery feature to recover recent transactions by making use of the ADR versions of both the.QBW and .TLG files- .QBW.adr and .TLG.adr files.

These steps can recover all but the last twelve hours of transactions.

  1. Create a folder with the name QBTest on the desktop.
  2. Open the folder that is storing your company file. Search for a folder with the name – QuickBooksAutoDataRecovery. Location of your company file can be checked on the Product Information Screen (press F2 or simultaneously press Ctrl and 1 keys to open this screen) and No Company Open Window.
  3. In the company file’s folder, find the .TLG.adr and .QBW.adr files. Files .TLG.adr, .QBW.adr and company files are the same name. If in case, you are unable to find the .TLG.adr and .QBW.adr files, perform these steps -
    • Simultaneously press Windows and E keys.

  4. After you have renamed the ADR versions of both .QBW and .TLG files, open QuickBooks.
  5. In the QBTest folder, open the saved company file. Check whether all transactions are thereby using your account register.
  6. Now, go to File.
  7. Choose Utilities. Select Verify Data under Utilities to check recovered file’s data integrity.
  8. If you find this copy of your QB company file good, you can proceed by moving your damaged company file to some other location and transferring the copy of your QuickBooks company file from the QBTest folder to the original location.
