In case your firewall blocks Internet access required for specific QuickBooks programs or files, you are likely to encounter errors. When you update your firewall to its latest version, chances are that you will fix this issue or you may be required to configure your firewall software. You may have to add exceptions for QuickBooks firewall ports.

Configure QuickBooks firewall ports automatically

When the QuickBooks File Doctor is made to run automatically, it opens the QuickBooks ports blocked by the firewall. This tool can thus be used to configure the Windows Firewall if in case Windows firewall is blocking QuickBooks.

Manually configure exceptions for QuickBooks firewall ports

To get the port number for QuickBooks 2019 you may try:

  1. Open QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
  2. On the Port Monitor tab, find QuickBooks Desktop 2019.
  3. Write down the Port Number. This is what you must use for your QuickBooks firewall ports exceptions.

Note: If you are planning on amending your QuickBooks ports assignment, you can do so by choosing Renew. However, you must visit the Scan Folder and tap on Scan Now to reset your firewall permissions. You can only renew 2019 ports, QuickBooks 2018 firewall ports, QuickBooks 2017 firewall ports and firewall ports used by QuickBooks versions before 2017 are static ports.

QuickBooks Desktop 2018 and other previous versions make use of static ports, with a given range per year version. The port format followed by them is 8019, XXXXX, XXXXX-XXXXX.

Add QuickBooks firewall ports exceptions

IMPORTANT: In case you’ve installed, or will be using many year versions of QuickBooks Desktop, it is important that you conduct the following for every year version.

  • From the Windows search bar, enter then open Windows Firewall.
  • Click on Advanced Settings.
  • Right-click Inbound Rules and choose New Rule.
  • Choose Port, then tap on Next.
  • Ensure that TCP is selected. Enter the specific ports required for your QuickBooks year version, then choose Next.

QuickBooks Desktop 2019: 8019, XXXXX

QuickBooks Desktop 2018: 8019, 56728, 55378-55382

QuickBooks Desktop 2017: 8019, 56727, 55373-55377

QuickBooks Desktop 2016: 8019, 56726, 55368-55372

  • Press Allow the Connection, then Next.
  • In case, prompted, make sure that all profiles are marked. When that is done, you may proceed to press Next.
  • Give the rule a name, such as QBPorts(year). Press Finish when done.
  • Repeat the steps above for the Outbound Rules (in the third step given above, choose Outbound Rules instead of Inbound).

After you have performed these steps, just try opening QuickBooks Desktop again in QuickBooks multi-user mode or over your network to see if the problem has been fixed.

In case you are still experiencing error or issues with connectivity, create exceptions to programs QuickBooks makes use of in Windows firewall.

Make firewall exceptions for QuickBooks programs

QuickBooks makes use of executable files to conduct many functions. For executable files list, you have to go through the section given below – configure your firewall or antivirus programs. Then, come here back to follow the steps given below for each of the files –

  • From the Windows search bar, enter then open Windows Firewall.
  • Press the Advanced Settings.
  • Right-click on Inbound Rules and press New Rule.
  • Choose Program, then Next
  • Press This Program Path, then Browse.
  • Locate the file location, then select Next.
  • Press Allow the Connection, then Next.
  • If prompted, ensure that all profiles are marked, then tap on Next.
  • Give the rule a name, then choose Finish.
  • Repeat the steps above for the Outbound Rules (in the third step given above, choose Outbound Rules instead of Inbound).

Configure your firewall or antivirus Programs

IMPORTANT: Now, you may only conduct this if configuring the Windows Firewall and adding exceptions for QuickBooks firewall ports are not resolving the problem.

  1. The robust number of firewalls available and their changing versions are resulting in Intuit unable to supply additional configuration steps. You may refer to your software’s documentation or the software publisher’s website for help.
  2. Intuit does not engage itself in supporting various types of internet security programs available in the market these days. In most cases, you should be fine by adding exceptions for QuickBooks firewall ports. In case you still meet errors while you try to open a file over a network or face multi-user problems, you may want to try adding the following executable/directories to your third-party antivirus program.

Add QuickBooks firewall ports exceptions or QuickBooks antivirus ports exceptions

Ensure TCP is chosen. When that is done, enter the ports that are required for your QuickBooks year version. See the port number for your QuickBooks version in manually configure QuickBooks firewall ports exceptions section given above in this article. In case, you have installed or are planning to use multiple year versions of QuickBooks Desktop, then you need to add ports for each year.

Executable files that you can add on your firewall or antivirus

If in case, you are using an operating system which is 64-bit, you should add executable files at the location Program Files (x86).

Executable files on your Antivirus or Firewall

Finally, check if you are able to use the QuickBooks Desktop software without a firewall or antivirus software blocking the access. If you could not do it even now, then there is something else that is blocking QuickBooks and will have to be separately resolved to unblock the access.
